Five little men in a flying saucer, Hold number of fingers up
flew round the world one day. make a circle with your right arm
they looked left and right, look left and right
but they didn't like the sight, Shake your head

After singing this nursery rhyme to your children why don't you try one of these further learning activities.

Personal social and emotional.

Talk about why you think the little men didn't like our world. What we would say to them to make them come and play with us.

Physical.

Pretend to fly around the room in a flying saucer.

Look left, look right.... Jump left, Jump right. fly left, fly right.....

play flying saucer Frisbee.

make an outer space sensory bin.

make aliens out of play dough, salt dough...

Communication and language.

Read the book 'five little men in a flying saucer'

Learn new words... names of planets...

Literacy.

make alphabet flying saucers.

practice drawing around a flying saucer.

look at different words relating to the nursery rhyme, and practice copying them in a variety of mediums... shaving foam, paint, sand....


Mathematics.

make five little alien puppets to use for singing the song. Reinforcing the concept of taking one away.

make a matching game, match the coloured alien to the correct coloured flying saucer.

stick googly eyes onto an alien face, discuss how many eyes they think aliens should have. Review how many googly eyes they have used. Is it the same, less or more.

Understanding the world.


physics for little ones... make your own flying saucer with a balloon and CD.

Look at space and the planets in it.

make some glowing aliens, and discuss why they glow.

Expressive arts and design.

Make an alien hat.

Make an alien headband with googly eyes.

make a pom-pom alien.

make a flying saucer out of a paper plate.

colour in or stick on pictures of aliens or flying saucers.

make some aliens faces out of old jigsaw pieces.
